University email addresses are created for staff during induction. University email accounts are of the form u1234567@anu.edu.au, and are the official email contact address for staff and students. We strongly recommend you check your ANU email address regularly, as official correspondence is sent to this address.
A personal email alias based on the naming convention firstname.lastname@anu.edu.au is extracted from HORUS or information supplied by local areas. The default convention is firstname.lastname@anu.edu.au. However, there are exceptions:
LITSS are responsible for the selection of your initial, unique address.
Personal email aliases are available to staff and affiliates. Postgraduate students may obtain a personal alias at the discretion of the LITSS for their area. Undergraduate students are not entitled to personal aliases.
Affiliate accounts can be provided for members of the ANU community who are not current students or staff members. They need to be created by Local IT Support Staff. Affiliate email addresses are of the form a123456@anu.edu.au
Functional email aliases are provided for roles associated with official responsibilities rather than individuals, and provide a mechanism for continuation of access should staffing change, or for access by multiple people. Functional accounts are created and maintained by LITSS.
Some areas of ANU maintain their own local email systems, and may provide an alternate address (for example Jane.Simpleton@rsx.anu.edu.au). These areas are not supported by the DOI, and you will need to contact the LITSS of the area for support or information.
In most cases your LITSS will configure your desktop computer to allow you to access your ANU email. Should you wish to do this yourself, please use the following settings:
Please note that if you are outside the campus network you will need to use the SMTP server provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or smtphost.anu.edu.au. Also note that for off-campus use authentication and encryption (SSL) are required. Many Internet Service Providers may firewall port 25, so the use of port 587 is recommended.
Alternatively, there is internet-based email system available.
